Semicon India Opens Wednesday. Most Institutions Attending Will Waste It.
Prime Minister Modi inaugurates Semicon India 2026 on September 17 at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi, under the theme "Transform Tomorrow: Silicon to Systems – Building the Ecosystem". For colleges, polytechnics and ITIs, it is the only three days of the year when ISM officials, plant HR heads, equipment vendors and six national delegations are in the same building — and almost none of the official programme is aimed at them.
The 2026 edition runs 500-plus exhibiting companies from more than 20 countries across 18,000 sqm, with six country pavilions — Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Singapore, Malaysia and Sweden — and a dedicated 360 sqm Workforce Development Zone. MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan has framed this edition around two things: three of the twelve Semicon 1.0 projects now in commercial production, and Semicon 2.0’s six pillars.
For comparison, the 2025 edition drew over 30,000 visitors and 350 exhibitors from 48 countries, and produced hundreds of MoUs and thousands of B2B meetings.
Semicon 2.0’s Pillar 6 carries a ₹1,000 crore provision for industry-led training centres. It is approved and funded. Its operational guidelines have not yet published.
The failure mode is predictable and almost universal: institutions treat this as a conference to attend rather than a set of meetings to hold. The keynotes will be recorded and published within a week. The plant HR lead standing at a booth on Friday afternoon will not be reachable again until next September.
Three things separate the institutions that come back with something. They carry a one-page programme concept and a two-page draft MoU rather than a prospectus. They ask plant operators a specific question — which roles cannot be filled locally, and what makes a candidate interviewable — rather than proposing collaboration in general. And they follow up inside fourteen days, which is roughly how long an event conversation stays warm. If Pillar 6 guidelines land at or near this event, the institutions holding a signed industry MoU on 20 September are in a different queue from everyone else.
