CDIL Mohali Is Expanding Under ISM — 60 Years of Semiconductor Manufacturing in Punjab Is Scaling Up
Continental Device India Ltd (CDIL) — a semiconductor manufacturer in Mohali since 1964 — is expanding from 600 million to 760 million units of annual capacity under ISM approval. MOSFETs, IGBTs, and SiC devices for EVs, renewable energy, and industrial power. The only ISM-approved facility in Punjab.
Continental Device India Ltd (CDIL), operating from Mohali, Punjab since 1964, is expanding its semiconductor manufacturing facility under India Semiconductor Mission approval. The brownfield expansion adds 158.38 million units of annual capacity, raising total output from 600 million to over 760 million units per year.
The expanded facility produces high-power discrete semiconductor devices: MOSFETs, IGBTs, Schottky Barrier Diodes, and transistors in both silicon and silicon carbide (SiC). Target markets: automotive electronics and EV charging infrastructure, renewable energy systems, industrial power conversion, and communications infrastructure. CDIL has a technology collaboration with Infineon for wafer and packaging processes — the same Infineon that is a Brain Domain client.
The expansion is one of four projects approved in the August 2025 Cabinet round alongside SiCSem (Odisha SiC fab), 3D Glass Solutions (Odisha advanced packaging), and ASIP Technologies (Andhra Pradesh). Combined investment from the four: ₹4,600 crore, 2,034 skilled jobs. CDIL's share: approximately $140 million (₹1,170 crore).
CDIL is the only ISM-approved semiconductor manufacturing facility in Punjab. For institutions in Mohali, Chandigarh, Patiala, Ludhiana — and frankly any institution in Punjab or Haryana — this is the closest live, operational placement destination in the semiconductor sector. It does not have Micron's brand recognition or Tata's headline numbers. But 60 years of continuous manufacturing, a proven Infineon partnership, and ISM-backed expansion to SiC devices (the materials category that powers EVs and 5G) make it a more reliable placement destination than a greenfield facility that still has to pour foundations. A college in Mohali that builds a power semiconductor technician programme and signs an MoU with CDIL has something no other institution in the region has: a local semiconductor placement partner. That's the conversation to start this month.
