Five Semiconductor Plants Operational in India by End 2026 — Vaishnaw Confirms; Women Operators From 7 States
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed on July 5 that five semiconductor plants will be operational in India by end-2026, up from three currently. And at CG Semi Sanand, women operators from Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, MP, Bihar, J&K, Kerala, and Gujarat are finding employment — the first visible evidence of what the semiconductor workforce actually looks like.
Three plants are currently in commercial production: Micron Sanand (inaugurated Feb 28), Kaynes Semicon Sanand (inaugurated Mar 31), and CG Semi Sanand (inaugurated Jul 4). Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed on July 5, 2026 that two more will be inaugurated in the coming months, bringing the total to five operational by December 2026. The two most likely candidates: Tata TSAT at Jagiroad, Assam (₹22,916 crore) and one of the Gujarat ATMP approvals (Suchi Semicon or Crystal Matrix).
The workforce detail from the CG Semi inauguration is the signal most observers missed: young women from Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala, and Gujarat are employed as operators at the facility. Vaishnaw described the plant as "not just a technical achievement but also a symbol of social change." The women were trained for semiconductor assembly work and relocated to Sanand — a mobility model that mirrors what the textile and electronics assembly industries have built over decades, now applied to chips.
Two implications for institutions. First, the operator-level training that gets women from Jharkhand and Bihar to semiconductor jobs in Gujarat is exactly the ISM 2.0 training centre model — short, focused, placement-linked, geographically mobile. An institution that can demonstrate this model has the strongest possible ISM 2.0 application profile. Second, five operational plants by end-2026 means five confirmed hiring organisations, with distinct technical profiles, each needing a steady supply of trained operators. The cluster economics that apply to Sanand also apply at a national level: an institution with placement relationships at multiple facilities — Micron, Kaynes, CG Semi, TSAT — is a far more credible ISM 2.0 training centre applicant than one targeting a single facility.
